David Millar studied archaeology and glaciology at the Universities of Bristol and Cambridge before working as a science journalist and editor in London. Poverty soon drove him into the oil industry however, as a result of which he lived in Dubai for over 10 years, where he bought a Jeep and developed a fascination for the archaeology of the Emirates and Arabian Peninsula. He now lives in western Canada where he writes on archaeology and past climate change, and has recently published Beyond Dubai: Seeking Lost Cities in the Emirates, a journey around the Emirates rediscovering the lost cities described in this article.
